You should start with Pro Tools LE on a Mac computer (i.e. 17-inch MacBook Pro with a lot of RAM, $ 2600). It is the LE edition of the professional, industry-standard music recording software. Auto-Tune is a plug-in that is often used to make singers sound good, but Pro Tools comes with a lot of other tools you’ll use even more — compressors, limiters and gates to keep levels consistent during mixing, equalizers and reverb/delay effects to help set the individual elements apart, even some virtual instruments.

If you can afford the Digi 003 Factory ($ 2200), that would be cool, too. It’s an 8-fader mixing console and audio interface that comes with Pro Tools LE — that’ll come in handy when you mix your tracks.

Beyond that, your tool box will depend on what kind of music you want to produce. Electronic? Live rock or alt? Pop/R&B? They all will entail different choices in the way of microphones, virtual instruments, etc. And of course, you’ll need a lot of good taste, an ear for talent, and the interpersonal savvy to coax stellar performances out of brilliant musicians — but that’s a bit outside the realm of software.
