TOLEDO — Every time an inmate at the Lucas County jail slips on a jumpsuit, he could be contributing to a global problem. That’s because they were made in third world countries. And, according to Commissioner Ben Konop, may have been made in sweatshops. “The company out of North Carolina that we contract with for inmate apparel that’s the company that’s been linked to this use of sweatshop labor,” Konop says. “They have been pretty well linked to some really atrocious practices overseas.” So Konop is proposing a law that would forbid the county from doing business with companies that have ties to sweatshops. Konop admits, that could cost taxpayers more. But, he says, “It’s a small step toward making the world a more just place.”
