Go to business school.

The music industry is REALLY, REALLY HARD to make it in. There are thousands of starry-eyed hopefuls out there trying to scratch out a living and very few people actually manage to make a living at it. If you go to music school and don’t make it, you’ll probably wind up working at McDonalds, because you won’t have any other marketable job skills. :-((

And you don’t need to go to music school to be a successful pop or rock singer. Most famous pop, rock, R & B or hip-hop singers never went to music school at all.

OTOH, if you study business in college, you’ll be able to support yourself with a decent day job while you work on your music in your spare time. And if you study business (finance, accounting, personal income tax, business law, marketing), you’ll have the necessary background to be able to either manage your own music career (or at least be able to talk intelligently with a manager or agent when/if you get one) — or you could possibly use your business background to get into artist management, or work for a record company, after you graduate.
