Question about indie labels for music?

Question by bpeter3196: Question about indie labels for music?
I’ve always been curious and since one of my favorite bands is on an indie label i have to ask as stupid as it what are the benefits of staying or going back to an indie label verses a major one. Common sense for one tells you that Indie labels don’t have the clout or money to really promote you or for big tours, venues, or just everyday things that are needed for promoting and traveling a band. On the other side obviously it’s easy to be left behind and abandonned by the major labels even with a contract if you aren’t selling hundreds of thousands of records or more like millions but you get my point. So Why in the case of one of my favorite bands might the band go to an indie label. The indie labels also usually don’t have the contacts for concerts or distribution networks that the big labels have all of which help promote your band so it seems silly to go back to an indie band or is it? I guess it would show your more about fans & music then money or fame but still.
The bands I was referring to as being now on indie labels were the Killers and Vendetta Red before their break up and at least one of the groups to spring to life as a result of the break up is on the same indie label now as the Killers. I know some bands on indie label can make it still big like for example the killers but generally most build just a cult like fans. I was just curious since both groups at one point I believe were picked up but major labels and at least Vendetta Red is known to have felt forgotten about as a result since I guess they didn’t want to conform which I can respect still it just seems like every masician hopes & dreams for a big deal for many reasons even if they love the music more then money yet some like the Killers go back to indie labels & I was just curious. I think Blink182 another Fav was indie again. Some bands can start their own or be the “franchise” player for a label but just curious in a general sense.

They didn’t become a band to sell out? Indie labels are less demanding? They don’t have to adhere to a certain style of music to generate more income for the label? They have the freedom to write what they want, play what they want, when they want, where they want. You’d have to ask the band their personal reasonings.
