Q&A: Working in the Rock Music Industry?

Question by Kyle: Working in the Rock Music Industry?
Hi, my goal in life pretty much is to work in the music industry, As maybe an agent, manager, talent scout, etc. I am currently a junior in high school, and plan to dual major in business and music. As I currently play the trumpet and piano and want a music degree too. Uhh i guess the question si if anyone has a job like this, whats it like, salary, time, time traveling, and your general view of it.
Thanks.

I can only tell you it is not an easy way to make money and it is harder and harder every day. If you have aspirations of making a great deal of money in this life there are many ways of making money that are much much easier. I was an A&R person at record label for about ten years. Most of the people I know are in music and I would say about 60% of them are now under-employed or unemployed. Salaries range greatly although starting salaries in music are always rather low for recent grads.

Generally speaking you do get to dress casually, you do work your ass off but you are surrounded by music…the music business however is considerably less fun than the music itself. There are a few books you should read if you are really interested. They might give you perspective. I will link them and a music business strategy blog that should help too.

If it’s really what you want don’t let what I wrote deter you- just realize that it is a very difficult way to make a living. It always has been and it’s even more difficult now. Then again, by the time you graduate highscool the business will be completely different from the next five years of tech advances so…what the hell do I know.
