Do you mean degrees?

There are a lot of different titles for them.

The two degree titles schools use most are music industries studies and music business.

Some schools have the degree as a bachelor of science, while others are bachelor of music. This basically just affects which core classes you have to take.

Often, the degrees are affiliated with the music schools (which means you’ll have to play an instrument at a decent level to get in). The advantage is that you’ll learn to communicate with musicians and you’ll have an easier time getting to know musicians if you wanted to get experience promoting them while in college.

You can also go for certificates, which means you take a few courses about music industry.

The education won’t teach you everything you need. You’ll learn the most on an internship and have a much greater chance of securing a job that way (if that’s what you want). If you’re entrepreneurial, start testing the waters now. You don’t always need the degree.

In fact, you don’t even need a business or music degree. I know a lot of the older people in the music business got communication degrees and worked on the radio/broadcast side of things. But, they are also the ones who seem to think that physical sales of albums are all that matter.

If you want to work while you’re in college, I know some college students that got a booking license and started up their own LLCs and put on some pretty big shows. It’d be a great start to entering the touring business.

You also may want to consider an IDS or Interdisciplinary Studies degree, my understanding is that you essentially create your own degree focused on what you want. Just make sure the school has classes worthwhile. Ask to see what recent grads are doing.

Also check to see if the school has a MEISA chapter. It’s a national club for college students interested in music business careers.
