Q&A: Music Mastering: Is there any point getting your music mastered if you’re going to distribute in MP3 format?

Question by R: Music Mastering: Is there any point getting your music mastered if you’re going to distribute in MP3 format?
I have music that I plan on putting up on my myspace and selling on itunes. Is there a point to getting it mastered? I’ve heard that mastering doesn’t make much difference if not distributed via wav format.

If you want your music to sound professional (in sound quality) you should get it mastered.

Yup there is a point:
“The source material is processed using equalization, compression, limiting, noise reduction and other processes.” -wiki

It also makes your music sound louder.
If you listen to an unmastered song and a mastered song (whether its on mp3 or CD) you will clearly be able to tell the difference.

Personally I wouldn’t sell my music if it weren’t mastered.

ps. see if you can find some mastered and unmastered sample songs online as examples…
