Q&A: Is there a way to get famous and make money through music without promotion?

Question by Robert: Is there a way to get famous and make money through music without promotion?
I have been making music for a long time(solo material and working with friends on and off). I have posted my music on myspace and put an album on cdbaby.net but they don’t seem to be getting as much attention as I thought they might. I make all styles of music(classical, rock, alternative, electronic and industrial). My friend and I are now working on a new album and we are trying to figure out the best ways to get our music out there and heard? We are thinking youtube. We can’t play live shows because he is currently on probation…any suggestions? We might have a his girlfriend and her friend help us with the promoting of our music(since we hate it). Mainly looking for advice from fellow musicians that have gone through this and have made to the other side.

i used to promote, book, manage, etc etcetc, and was also a musician.

there is NO way to make money without promoting.

Technically myspace and youtube ARE promotion.

If you have a good enough “product” people will buy it.

if you feel that your music is good enough, and your recordings are of good enough quality, go to musicsubmit.com and purchase some submissions… i used to have a company that was basically a competitor to them, I got bored with it and shut it down. These guys do a good job.

i’ve known hundreds of people in the industry, my current business partner is signed to one of the best indie labels out there, and he still doesn’t make jack for money. I don’t mean to shoot your dreams down but, unless you have something VERY good and original, you’re not going to get rich at it. I could tell you ways to make a little bit, but, it’s nothing you can’t research on your own… which of course is what i’d prefer. If you don’t have the ability and drive to make it work, it will NEVER happen for you..

so by you saying you hate promoting, i tend to think the ladder is true.

good luck though
