Q&A: How does a rap/hip hop group get their start in the music business?

Question by jaime: How does a rap/hip hop group get their start in the music business?
I know a man who is in a local rap/hip hop group. He told me about a deal he could make with the local radio station to get his group’s song on the air. Only he can’t afford to pay the $ 900 contract. Can he get a sponsor for his group, or are they better off raising the money by themselves?
