Q&A: Can you play loud music inside a business?

The company I work for rents out a back room of the building to a band who plays twice a week between 7-10PM. We are located in a business district and there are two music studios and two bars that often play loud music at night throughout the week. Well, one night the band was playing in our back room when the restaurant that’s almost behind our building called the cops because the band was “Too loud and they were trying to have a party”.

So how come the two bars can continue to play loud music ( much louder than the band ) but they can’t? The police officer didn’t have much to say about it when one of the band members asked them that and if the restaurant tries to complain again I would like to be able to contact them and ask them to back off. Keep in mind this is located in a business district, there are no residents around.
