I signed up for a gym membership and later tryed to cancel it. I found out from the owner, that the girl who drew up the contract wasnt really an employee but a student trying to get credits for school. The student lied to me about how they were going to take the monthly payments and she never told me it was a 3 year contract. Now i have collections after me to pay. Is this legal to have a nonemployee draw up business contracts? How do i handle this and what are the laws?

Even though they were an “intern” they still represented the company. Your responsibility as a consumer is to read contracts BEFORE signing them and you would have found that it was in fact a 3 year contract. The fault lies with you that you didn’t read it before you signed. You are obligated to that contract. The way I see it, if you have to pay for it anyways, might as well get some use out of it. You can always try contacting the owner again and trying to come to some sort of arrangement on the matter. But they will still explain that everything was listed in the contract. Try reading it now and see if it clearly states that it is a 3 year contract and exactly how the payments would be deducted.
