Music Business Degree?

Question by Ike: Music Business Degree?
I am a student pursuing a business management degree in Texas. However I am interested specifically in the music business and none of the colleges in Texas offer that as a degree program. I have done some research and found some schools with very strong programs in music business such as Belmont University. Should I complete a degree in Business management in Texas and then try for a graduate degree at a school like Belmont? or should I transfer and pursue a Bachelor’s degree from a school that offers a music business degree as soon as possible? or does it even matter? Does anyone know of any programs in or near Texas that offer music business degrees? Please let me know if anyone has a suggestion on what would be the most beneficial move

~Complete your degree at Texas, Hold off on Graduate school until AFTER you get some work experience. It will make you a stronger candidate.

or should I transfer and pursue a Bachelor’s degree from a school that offers a music business degree as soon as possible?

~ Nope, that is NOT necessary.

or does it even matter?

~ What matters is what you do as an undergrad. Major in B.Mang , AND take internships in the music industry ( say a radio station, or a record company, etc). Get that basic experience to develope professionalism and build a resume. Find out from ppl who already work in the field what they would do differently if they were undergrads and what changes they see in the business. Basically, do your research. Ask serious questions about where you would work, for whom and doing what. COme up with knowledge on places to work is a start.

~ Your specific degree isn’t so important as to your experience. So get out there and do your research. Even accountants work in the music biz.

Please let me know if anyone has a suggestion on what would be the most beneficial move.
~ The most important move is to do your research on the field. Start at your college career center, tell them what interests you and they should be a START for you.
