jobs in the music industry?

Question by Hilary Morgan: jobs in the music industry?
i love music. i can’t sing or play any instruments, but i really want to be involved in the music industry. i don’t know if that’s possible since i can’t sing or play an instrument, but i still want to. i also think being a dj would be cool, but i don’t exactly know what to do to be one. or anything. so if any one has any details on getting into the music industry that would be helpful! i know it’s a competitive field, but i just want details for now. as many as you can give mee. i am looking for possible options, not that i’m “qualified” for. thanks!

For starters, you can apply to work at a music store as a cashier such as “Guitar Center” or something like that. You’ll be able to do basic customer service while at least being exposed to musicians and the different types of work people do. Think about what kind of position you want to have in music. Do you want to be the talent, sound editor, agent, producer..etc? You should find a mentor or someone who works in the field to give you insight on what they do, what their lifestyle is like and most importantly what the realistic income level is like.

DJing seems cool when you’re young but unless you’re really talented, you don’t make a lot of money and of course you need to ask yourself if that is the lifestyle you want to have… working from gig to gig or do you want a stable job in one location so you can build relationships with your family and friends?

Check out the Berklee School of Music in Boston – their website should give you ideas on majors and different careers in music. Unless you “know people” in the industry it can be hard to get into… the other route of course is to enroll in a reputable school where you may pay highly for tuition but you will also be buying in to the “network” of well respected alumni and instructors/professors who can mentor and help you find your career path.

Good Luck in your search.
