Is this an obsessive disorder? (see details)?

Question by Dickens Cider: Is this an obsessive disorder? (see details)?
ok here is the story relating to a friend of mine who seems obsessed with how much money other people make I will give you some examples:

everyone will be watching football and talking about how good a player is, my friend rather than talk about that player’s skill or his stats or how good the guy was in college will ask things like “how much is his contract worth?” or “does he make more than so-and-so?” now this isn’t once in awhile its the standard of discussing sports with him.

another example: everyone will be discussing a great movie and way more frequently than talking about the plot or action within the film, he wants to talk about how much the actor got paid or how much the producers of the movie grossed, once again this is not every other discussion, but all the time.

example 3: a commercial comes on featuring a celebrity, he will ALWAYS state, “I wonder how much they had to pay him for that”

example 4: when talking about favorite music artist, rather than discuss the best albums or great songs they have done, he wants to know the bands net worth, or how much do they get paid for every album.

I could keep going with examples, but I’m sure the point is clear. Now the question is:

Is this a form of an obsessive disorder? I have heard the term “money-rexia” but from my understanding that is simply a ‘pc’ way to say miserly, and my friend, I would not consider miserly but he seems to favor the possibily of winning the lottery as a goal over actually managing finances to the point of prosperity. if this is a disorder what is it called?

It just sounds like he is always preoccupied with money. It doesn’t mean there is a disorder. Some people are just hyper focused on money and think it’s the only thing that’s important. It would be like someone who loves baseball and uses baseball analogies for random things that aren’t related. It’s a passion. While it’s not the best thing that your friend is always thinking about money, there really isn’t a mental disorder involved.
