If some people don’t even sell records anymore, why are they still getting signed by record labels?

Question by Adam: If some people don’t even sell records anymore, why are they still getting signed by record labels?
I always wonder why it is that some artists who don’t sell albums anymore still get record deals when it’s obvious that they’re not going to be money makers. How do the record labels make their money? I see some artists get signed again and again after numerous flopped albums.

“record label” is now just a phrase.

They make money from things called CD sales, iTunes sales, tours and merchandise.
