If I want to send my music demo to record labels, what should I include with it?

Question by Chris A: If I want to send my music demo to record labels, what should I include with it?
I have a four song demo of songs I’ve recorded at home on my 8-track. (I actually have 11 songs recorded, but I wouldn’t send them all out). I’ve been encouraged to send it out to (mostly independent) record labels in order to try to get some distribution. However, I don’t know what I should include with the demo. What should I tell the labels? Do I need to include pictures? Am I missing anything else?

Just send them a letter explaining who you are, and how much you play live. Make sure to tell them about gigs you have soon so they can come check you out.
