I am an artist and will be installing a work of art over a year. I will have to hire independent contractors, lawyers and purchase lots of material. I dont want to pay for an accountant and feel quick books can help at least keep my accountant bill low if I have to use him/her.

Open a separate checking account for all you business transactions. Segregate your business and personal transactions. Deposit all your business receipts in the business checking account. Use quick books if you feel comfortable with that.
