I’m planning on joining the Army Reserves this year and then taking part in Army ROTC while attending college through the SMP. I’ve been told that when I reach my junior year, I will have to sign a new contract that requires me to serve an addition 8 years. Is this on top of my original 8 year contract or do the two overlap requiring me to only serve 10? I’m just a little confused as to how long I would have to stay in.

I answered your question before but I did not put in detail. When you contract during your junior year, your initial contract is void. That means that you will still have two years of rotc and then you will have 8 years which you begin serving once you are commissioned. So if you join the reserves now and serve 2 years on your initial 8 year obligation and then sign in your junior year you will have 2 more years of rotc and then 8 more years as an officer. You will have served 2 for the reserves which counts towards retirement and towards time in service followed by 2 years of rotc which unless you do smp does not count towards time in service or towards retirement time followed by your contractual 8 years as an officer (remember that if you do not have a scholarship you can do 6 years drilling followed by 2 years in the inactive ready reserve. If you have a scholarship you might have to serve all 8 years as a drilling reservist.)
