How do you contract/ tighten your abs and how can you tell if they are properly contracted?

You should be able to “brace” your abdominal muscles like any other muscle. To feel your abs contract you want to lay flat on the ground. Now do a sit-up motion with your upper body and feel your abs with your hand while doing this. They should tense up a bit. If you are unable it is because they may not be developed enough. No big deal. What you want to do to build them up is bicycle crunches. I like them because unlike sit-ups they really target the abs and I think that they are more effective. Plus sit-ups are often done wrong by beginners and you often wind up using your legs too much and not concentrating on the abs.
