How are the “record companies” adjusting to changes in how music is distributed?

Question by American citizen and taxpayer: How are the “record companies” adjusting to changes in how music is distributed?
Who are the winners and losers in the new world, where music is downloaded rather than purchased on LP, CD, etc.?

What will the “music business” look like five to ten years from now?

The record companies are adjusting by suing everyone that they possible can, including a new lawsuit the RIAA brought against a man for simply uploading cd’s that he already owned on to his hard drive. The winners are music fans, and any bands smart enough to embrace this new paradigm quickly. Radiohead is a perfect example. Hopefully, in five to ten years the “music business” will be non-existent, and music fans can directly support musicians making worthwhile art, without some greedy CEO making millions of dollars by exploiting people with actual talent.
