Driving through town, we saw the old church on the square and several refurbished hotels. “Sleepy” might currently describe San Juan del Sur … but probably not for long. The road — we were on a cruise ship tour bus with 60 others — from the coast to the main highway was terrible — full of giant pot hotels, etc. They say it’s because of the recent hurricanes, but, having driven in Central America before, I think it’s probably just like that. In any case, the driver spotted some howler monkeys — including a couple of babies — in the trees, so we were briefly distracted. Our guide gave us some info on Nicaragua: –Now has a liberal government who can monitor Ortega and the goings-on of those in power; –Currently, electricity is purchased through a Spanish company which has a monopoly in Nic. The gov’t hopes to break this contract and develop green energy, using the rivers and volcanoes; –Coffee is #1 export (and best coffee in world, natch); –There are two autonomous regions on the Atlantic coast, which are very inaccessible — later conversation revealed that much of the region can only be reach via airplane or boat).
