Bud Hobbs & His Trail Herders b. Oct. 16, 1919, Bakersfield (Kern County) California, USA d., July 18, 1958, Bakersfield (Kern County) California, USA Bud Hobbs was a western singer during late 1940’s to mid 1950’s. Bud Hobbs and his Trail Herders recorded several songs for MGM records during the late-1940s and early1950s. Three of his songs broke into the top-20. In 1954, Bud recorded “Lousiana Swing” and his backing band included, Buck Owens (lead guitar), Bill Woods (piano), and the dual fiddles of Oscar Whittington and Jelly Sanders. This song may have been the first to be recorded in the legendary style known as the Bakersfield Sound. Bud’s professional career started in San Francisco where he played music and sang vocals with Dude Martin’s Band. He later started his own dance band, the Trail Herders. During the late-1940s, Bud was a DJ for Dude Martin in the Bay area. In 1950, he had his own radio program in Stockton, California. Hobbs also had a weekly television program and appeared on television with the Cousin Herb Henson Trading Post gang in Bakersfield, California. Wayne Powers, Lloyd Jones. Bill Woods, Jack Trent, Buck Owens, Oscar Whittington, Terry Preston (Ferlon Huskey), Tom Collins and Ray Heath were part of Bud’s band during a recording session in June 1953. Bud secured a recording contract with MGM records and recorded for the label between 1947 and 1954. Three of his songs made it into the Billboard chart including, Lazy Mary (No. 13, 1942), I Heard
