Besides being a performer there are many things you can do

music photographer, agent, manager, publicist, producer of events, teacher, tour management, journalist/reviewer, venue booker, venue management, sound, lighting, staging, recording engineer, public relations, roadie? the list is endless. t.v presenter, radio, working with a record company, label… choose something and get in on the ground floor…. it will be an education…become an expert!!! Sound business skills …no ego….if you want to organise gigs etc..

There are no hard and fast rules here. The best way to get into this industry (depending of what type of music you are into) is to not bs yourself. Find out what you are good at… good at organising, good at advertising and p.r, good at negotiating, have great ears in the studio, whatever your talent is just go and find out from the people already doing it.

I was a performer that set up my own agency in the end and probably did all of the above jobs at one time or another. Don’t forget …its a business….. and it can get very unglamourous especially if you don’t know your ****. Performers will rely on you to do the “best job” for them. Be discerning… stick to your talents and get a great reputation doing whatever you choose to do. Watch out for famous for fiveminute types (in all categories) because they don’t graze for long. Talent wins through in the end….attach yourself to the best…. you’ll jump over the pack this way.

Good luck!
