College/career advice? What could I major/minor in at NYU and do after I graduate if I’m interested in music?

Question by Maria D: College/career advice? What could I major/minor in at NYU and do after I graduate if I’m interested in music?
Music is my passion and always will be and just like any aspiring musician, I’d love to have a career as a performer writing my own music in a band or something. But of course, those jobs are limited and never guaranteed. I’m about to be a sophomore in high school but I think it’s time I start thinking about what I want to do before and when I apply to college. I’m very good at guitar and it’s something I’m interested in but would majoring in music be a good idea? I am honestly just scared that music won’t work out and I won’t have something to fall back on. I don’t want to end up teaching music to kids at a school after I graduate from college. What other music-related majors could I take while having something like music performance as a minor? Maybe a career as a music critic or music magazine writer or something similar. What other careers are there in music (besides being a performer) that pay well? My hopes would be to minor in music and meet someone to jam and start a band with on the side. If that works out and the opportunity for musical success comes, I’ll take it. Any advice?

After doings some research, I’ve narrowed it down to NYU. Mainly because both the academic aspect and art aspect of the school are top of the line. New York is also a cultural heartland where I would be able to learn more about music through NY’s music scene. I guess overall I’m scared that music won’t work out and I will end up teaching music (unhappily) at a high school in some place. What advice can I get from anyone who has similar goals or did something similar. I guess what I’m asking too is what should I do: major in something where great success is hard to achieve like music and risk not ‘becoming famous?’ Or should I take the risk and follow my dreams because as the Strokes’ song says, you only live once. Thank you!

Also, besides music, what other careers are there where I could be involved with culture and the music scene or something? Maybe like a music writer, producer, or a party planner? In larger cities like new york or la, would opening a bar or club bring in good money? What kinds of courses should I consider if I want to do something like this? Thanks!
