Question by TheQueenOfLA: Is Universal/Motown Records a good company to sign a contract with? Meaning do they promote their artists?
To their extent or just a little bit of promotion? A friend of mine is coming out as a rapper under universal records and I don’t think their very good?

most bands have to promote themselves, through word of mouth and the internet.

universal will give you money so you can survive while you are making your record, and they should help setup places and venues for you to play at

and they will probably put some ads up for you, but if your band is good and has a fan base then it will grow with time, no matter what label you are with

you need to look at you contract and figure out how much of a cut universal is taking per cd, per radio airplay, per concert, for any distribution of your music or image on tshirts in stores and online on the internet at itunes or wherever they are gonna distribute your stuff

and if they are taking a big percentage, are they giving you some security in the form of an advance before you start playing

universal and motown are well known, I would assume that they have had successful artist in the pasts, and that should be a good sign, make sure you get a good music agent to negotiate the contracts with you

and try not to sign a long term deal, so you can renegotiate after a few years
