Question by brie: how easy is it to get an internship at a record label?
or some other music place?
im majoring in business at penn state and i really want to major in music business so i can get a job in artist relations, or artist management. but i cant find a good college that i want to go to.;
so i was thinking that durning the summers i could go to new york city or somewhere and intern for a record label place.

It’s not easy, those are really sought-after positions, so you better start working towards it now. Most labels won’t even think about hiring you if you don’t have at least some experience, and you cannot get experience unless you get hired. So … i’d say, do what smart students do when they want to get into their University of choice. Look for places where you would like to get into, and start sending kick-butt letters, make phone calls, be persuasive.
Talk to anyone who could be a contact or know of a contact.
Do research on the types of audio-related businesses in your city. Use the Internet. Go to the library and look up the many directories, and read the weekly and monthly recording industry trade magazines and journals. Get on the phone, and do some informational interviews with the recording industry business you would most like to work for. Even knock on people’s doors. Do whatever you have to do to get an internship. Internship opportunities do not come knocking on your door. You have to motivate yourself to get involved with this industry.
Even this is going to help you, a lot of doors will slam on your face, but some might open for you. Then, be prepared to ride the roller-coaster of your life. IF you get hired, sometimes you will feel on top of the world and there are going to be days where you’ll think it was not worth the trying.
You will have to take the good with the bad. Interns may start out as the low men and women on the ladder, but those that impress with their positive attitudes and dedication to their work, are more likely to stay.
