Question by sjygfp: What do I do? I started a new job and I essentially just print out emails and sometimes answer the phone.?
The person that I am assisting is the Associate General Counsel for a major company in the entertainment business. I did type up a template for contract for her but otherwise I don’t do anything… well, I do take messages for her when she isn’t in the office, or on the other line, but when she is in the office she takes her own calls and that is most of the time. I want to do something more for the company and to be a good assistant.

Anyone have any pointers or suggestions?
Oh, I should also add that I got this job through a temp agency and it’s an “indefinite position.” Whatever that means.

But, I have heard from a friend that she knew someone that worked like that for the same co. for 2 years and was eventually hired permanently. A bonus for this job is that it is only a 5 minute drive or 15 min. walk from home. I have been here almost 4 weeks now. Everyone is wonderful and it seems very laid back. I have extended my help to everyone in our dept. and have gotten some meager scraps of work e.g. proofreading and editing manuals which I just breezed through and now I set waiting for more.
The person that got hired permanently from the temp pos. also got a 20% raise with the perm pos.

If you are getting paid well enough then you are lucky. Try asking for more work-tell them you would like to be challenged more & you feel you aren’t being used to your fullest potential.
Good Luck!
