Is it a bad idea to make my CD with this independent studio?

Question by Lukigal: Is it a bad idea to make my CD with this independent studio?
I have been offered to make a 10 song CD by an independent recording studio. The studio mostly does gospel, but the owner is interested in doing something different with me because I write my own songs in spanish, english and japanese. I want to do this CD, but, I really don’t know if it is a good idea. They told me that, if I get an offer by a record Label, I should not take it, that I should go on with their studio instead because the major labels, supposedly, stay with most of the money or could decieve me with a bad contract or something. I don’t know. He is asking for a $ 5,000 deposit, and the total cost might reach at least $ 20 to 25,000 because of the musical arrangements for my songs, the art on the cover of the CD, the copies, etc. I thought, correct me if I am wrong, that if they are going to make money with me, why should I pay everything? I know it is because they are, after all, independent, but, what do you think? The package the person from the studio offered me comes with 1,000 copies that I have to sale. They have worked with some merengue artists (it’s from Puerto Rico) that have been on the radio and that have been signed later by major labels (some Michael guy who I really don’t know about because I do not like merengue is an example he gave me). I thought about recording only one or two songs with this studio, to reduce the cost, but they say that it is best to make the whole CD. I don’t know, what do I do? Do I do this? Is the cost ok or too high? Thanks!

Contact other artists that have worked with this company to see if you’re being scammed. I don’t think you are.
