Q&A: Help a teacher! Sub or daycare?

Question by Cobaltus: Help a teacher! Sub or daycare?
Please help! I’m a young and unemployed teacher. I subbed for a year and still couldn’t find job this year, so I am going to sub again. Because subbing is not that reliable where I live, I was applying to other jobs like day cares and preschools, not really thinking I would get one. I woke up this morning and had an email in my inbox from a day care that was sent late last night. It told me to come in for an interview this morning. Because the email was sent so late at night, I didn’t actually read the it until after 10Am. I called the center and got an interview, although the director seemed really grouchy that I called so late. When I went in, the director never asked my name and seemed totally uninterested. She was doing all kinds of other stuff, like filing papers and typing a flyer that had nothing to do with my interview, while she was talking with me. She was so focused on her other work that she barely looked up at me. She also took several personal phone calls on her cell phone while I was in the room “interviewing.” She seemed totally uninterested and never smiled or told me anything about the job. Then, she starts having me fill out this paperwork, which I assumed was the application, but I realized it was a contract! She never even verbally offered me the job, said I had qualities she liked or anything! So, because I’m dumb and need a job, I went through with it. I am supposed to start on Monday, but now I’m having second thoughts. I looked up the daycare online and there are some bad reviews, mostly about the management and director.

Since my ultimate goal is to teach band in public schools (that’s my certification) would it be more beneficial for me to sub or take the daycare job? The daycare job starts out at about the same pay that I would get if I subbed every day, but subbing is competetive here, so I am not guaranteed work. Ugh, it’s so frustrating, I just want to teach!!! Please help, especially if you are a teacher!

I think you should take the daycare job. You can use your skills here to. Keep applying for teaching jobs though. Jobs are never set in stone. Have you thought about moving to an area that has a lot more openings. Oklahoma needs teachers bad but they dont pay that great. Or maybe taking a teaching job that is not in your area of study. You can always wait until the one you want opens up.
