How does a new rap artist actually get their music in front of the right people?

Question by Queenie: How does a new rap artist actually get their music in front of the right people?
Are there real A&R people out there that are really interested in signing a talented rapper that could make them rich? If so, why is it so hard for new artists to get their music heard? I have an extremely talented son who needs to be heard by someone who has the authority to offer him a contract. Maybe someone in an influential position will read this…
Thank you so much for your response. I feel very encouraged because every single thing you have suggested he has done or is doing. I feel much more confident that he is on the right path and will be successful.

I can almost assure you that a person in an influential position will not be reading Yahoo Answers looking for new talent.

Encourage your son to play local shows and work at recording some songs. Send demo CDs to record labels, but expect a lot of “no unsolited material accepted” to come back to you. More importantly, send CDs to radio stations – especially college radio stations in big metro markets where he could reasonably travel to play gigs. Put together a press kit and get it out to local newspapers and magazines to review. Set up a web site to make sure anyone in the world who wants to can find out about his music. If you really want to go all out, actually invest in producing his first CD and sell it on-line. Tons of artists have made a decent sized fan base without a record contract. Having that following is what is going to get an artist noticed. But whatever you do, never stop promoting the music and trying to get a record label to listen. (Chances are you’ll have better luck starting with smaller labels, but there’s not reason not to spend the couple of dollars to send a kit in to the big wigs)
