Question by Couman: What do you make of this “Skins” scandal?
So I was thinking, hypothetically, why shouldn’t MTV show child porn?
Please don’t say “because it’s illegal”, that’s not what I mean. (The answer “because it’s not a music video” is acceptable, however.)
I mean, if any of the content on Skins really met the legal definition of child porn (which I doubt very much) would that prove MTV is evil, or would it prove something is wrong with the law?
The purpose of laws against child pornography is to protect children, but do these actors really need that protection? They have agents and contracts and fat paychecks (compared to most people). We know there won’t be any real sex, they wouldn’t show that even with adults. And these aren’t exactly little kids anyway, they’re all older teens.
It’s pretty far removed from the “scary guy with a camcorder and a kid in the basement” type scenario you normally think of when you hear “child porn”. So, legal aspects aside, is this show actually hurting anyone? What do you think?
