Which is the best degree to work in music management?

Question by : Which is the best degree to work in music management?
i wanna work in music management/pr. And i know the best option is to just work your way up and work your ass off, but if i do decide to go to university this year i have two options. I can study Public Relations. I dont know how far it will get me though. Because public relations sounds a bit…office-y. But in the forth year you get to do a work placement, which the uni will sort out, and some of the placement names have been really good. Also the university itself is really good! Alternatively I could go and study ‘Music and Entertainment industry management’. Which sounds alot more directed into where I want to go. However the university is poorly ranked and it is a shit hole. And Im thinking maybe music companies would want better degrees instead of ‘mickey mouse’ degrees. Advice please 🙂
well thanks for putting me off my dream career!

Blunt! Hi

well I guess it’s time for you to start thinking of these things you are going to be making college major decisions not too far off in the future. Honestly? I advise to stay away from the music business in all areas it’s really fu*ked up. let’s see, a newbie in the music business is kind of like a rookie cop. they go into law enforcement with this vision that they can change or have an impact on society by following our crap legal system, then when they both see how fu*ked up our legal system is and how many criminals there are out there at some point most of them just mentally render themselves hopeless and their cop job is just another job and a pay check.

but to tell you the truth the chances are higher for someone to get their foot in the door in law enforcement than it is in the music business at any level. I know… I am being really helpful aren’t I? lol.. sorry. okay lets go with some positives because unless you attempt a career at anything you will never know if you will be successful at it. if you want to work in management at any business including your possible own you obviously want to major in business in college. so as far as college goes definitely major in business.

It’s just that I have known a lot of pr reps, promoters and even people with their own independent labels and it’s a struggle to make a decent living, most of them always either have 2 jobs or have some other means of income. they do pr, promotion and other things for fun and the extra money is always nice to them. in pr or being a rep you have to have the ability to see talent right away. I don’t know where you live I DON”T WANT TO KNOW but while in school right now I advise you start your aspirations by getting involved in your local scene. being a rep often requires you go out and see a lot of bands play and there is a lot of crap out there so other than writing, being able to notice good talent, ear plugs are an essential tool in pr and rep.

get out there try to get to know some other pr / reps so they might shed a key hole of light on how they got started. in pr communication and social skills are also very essential, so is having a lot of contacts. so being politically correct in this line or work is also important. anyway, back to the college issue, you want no less than some kind of bachelor’s degree in business management or business, but go for your masters is possible. oh and at an ACCREDITED educational facility preferably at a university somewhere. why should you look into my advise? because I am an halfway decent successful music producer and studio musician, I may work at a low profile local studio here in my city but I have always preferred a low profile which is also something not wise in the music business. I recommend reaching for the stars in this business, just don’t be let down if you don’t get very far because the music business is a BEAST, but I wish you good luck. 🙂

edit
No! don’t let me put you off anything blunt, I just gave advise from experience. I say go for it! you may be cut out for it far more than I am. if I threw you off your career dream than I feel terrible. either way I say go for it…
