Record label/management question?

Question by SinDelle Morte: Record label/management question?
I recently signed a contract with a record label (indie). They seem pretty cool and I talked to the guy for awhile and I talk to him via IM almost every day. We agreed that they would have the tracks mastered before putting them out anywhere. The guy sent me the code for the snocap-type player today and I put it on my MySpace. I listened to the tracks and they don’t sound very good. I asked him if he mastered them because I was concerned about the sound quality and he said “not yet.” I am concerned also why he would put them out at all if they hadn’t been finished. How long should I wait for it to be done before I say something again? Should I take the player down until the tracks are fixed? No one is going to pay money for music that does not sound professional and I really don’t want that to be representative of my work.

What would you do?

(If you’d like to check it out, you can go to my MySpace page and scroll down until you see the 2nd player. You will see what I mean.)

If you’re not happy with it, then you should talk to them. I run a small label here and I wouldnt be happy if one of the groups I work with was upset at the quality of some of the work of theirs I put up. Talk to them and explain your concerns to them, and (if they’re reasonable) then they’ll take them down and master them properly before putting them up.

Your concerns sound like totally reasonable ones to me.

The honest truth is that, in situations like this, unless you still actually own the original work (That is, you didnt sign it over to the label) the label doesnt have to do anything and can ignore your requests. However, I think they’d be stupid to do that. Why would you upset your talent like that?
