Question for those with Music Industry knowledge. When a band is signed, what does the record label then own?

Question by Amos Wellings: Question for those with Music Industry knowledge. When a band is signed, what does the record label then own?
When, say, an independent band signs a record contract with a label, what does the label own, in terms of rights, and songs? And then, what does that mean from the band’s viewpoint, what can they then do or not do?

This is for an Extension 2 English major work so accurate answers would be best, thanks!

When a label signs a band the label will usually asks for exclusive licensing of the band’s name and image/likeness as well as complete ownership of the band’s songs it plans on releasing.

The band will then be paid in royalties from the label.

Keep in mind: Though the band no longer owns it’s music it does still hold the rights to its name and image. The label simply has the right to use it.

The band can no longer manufacture, distribute, or sale that music online.
