What type of engineering degree deals with music and sound?

Question by yahoos the best!!: What type of engineering degree deals with music and sound?
I have loved music all my life and I also am studying engineering right now. I’m debating between declaring a major in mechanical, electrical, and industrial. My dream job would be any combination of engineering/business with music. Would electrical engineering put me in a position for a music technologyish job?

Not as such, but it won’t hurt. Almost all modern recording is done digitally, so a CompSci degree would be more directly applicable, but a solid understanding of analog and digital signal processing won’t hurt.

There are a variety of “audio engineering” courses out there, but they aren’t really engineering in the same sense as E.E. is engineering.

At our school, we tend to see a lot of people major in E.E. and minor in Music Technology. You should check to see if your school has something similar.

I think, at the end of the day, E.E. is a fine choice. Do get course work on signal processing and do take some good programming coursework, especially if you can get into the more hardware oriented programming. Also take some music theory courses, if you can, and you should definitely learn to play a little guitar and piano. Some basic acoustics won’t hurt either.

If your school has a Theatre department, also check to see if they have any classes in sound reinforcement or design. Sound reinforcement, as such, isn’t directly applicable to recording, but there’s a high degree of overlap between the two.
