Question by jakiterry: Is there a resource on-line that can advise on price structures for adapting a story into a stage play?
I have adapted original children’s stories into plays as a part of my job as an after school drama teacher. However, I have just secured a contract with a national recording artist who has written a novel that he wants adapted into a stage play, and I want to charge a fee that is mutually agreeable to us both. What are the rules, and how do I go about finding out?
i’ve read the piece. it’s two acts with three to five scenes total. that still doesn’t give me a gauge of how to negotiate a fair price. thank you, though.

there cannot be any set rate for this as much will depend on how easy it is to adapt – for instance a novel set almost entirely in one room will be much easier to adapt than one set travelling in many different countries.

i suggest you read (or at least skim-read) the novel to guess how much work you would need to put in then consider what you would want paying for that length of time – double or triple that figure and start negotiating!
