There is this band that I wants to be my friend on my space. Is this just for promotion?

Most likely. A lot of them just request to be your friend so that they can get their friend count up and a lot of times they tend to flood your bulletin board so that all you see are their ads/announcements and not be able to view your actual friends posts.
