Why does liking obscure/unknown music make some people feel good about it?

Question by twilightfromanothersunset: Why does liking obscure/unknown music make some people feel good about it?
Especially when a underground band gets big; it acctually annoys me, because everyones like “omg they’re so new and good and that” and i’m like “well no, they were out like 5 years ago, just no-one liked them then”
I just don’t like the feeling of liking a lot of popular music, it just makes me feel…like everyone else you know?
i like finding out about new bands, seeing them live, etc, it’s so much fun and it’s really good to see a little local band go from nothing to acctually getting a contract and getting some fans.
plus its not even if popular music in the UK is any good anyway; the charts suck and sometimes, i know this sounds concieted, but i check that none of my favourite bands/artists are on the charts. it has happend once, they were about number 20 something of the indie bbc chart, and it didnt effect how much i liked them, just made me think.
eg: everyone likes Muse now. a couple years ago no-one knew who they were! now everyone knows their songs and likes their music, admittedly its probably because of Supermassive black hole being in twilight. which also sucked. but anyway
any ideas why liking unknown music makes people feel better about it?
thanks

I get what you’re saying, though I don’t really understand what your question is.
I particularly like it when a group that I’ve seen underground gets semi-big to the point where they have enough fans, but it’s not a mob-scene.
2 years ago my friend showed me an Owl City song (Before that guy got famous) and it still wasnt even particularly great. Now Fireflies has come out and everyones talking about it and its all over the radio. I cant f***ing stand that song.
I also find it annoying when I like a group and I buy an album, all the songs are great, but there are those 2 to 4 singles that I just cant stand listening to because they’re so overplayed.
(K, enough of my random ranting)
P.S. I don’t know a lot of Muse, and I’ve never heard SMBH before, but Hysteria is an awesome song.
