Who owns the copyright on the sound recordings?

Question by Answerme741: Who owns the copyright on the sound recordings?
Usually, the person who pays for the recordings owns the copyright.
However, I recorded for free at a studio that operates without a business license, has not paid taxes in 10 years and is not owned by the studio manager who offered to record me for free.
I wrote the songs, played guitar, bass, did back ups, you name it. I acted as engineer, I paid the studio musicians and I even forked over $ 700 for the Pro Tools hardware when the existing hardware crashed.
There was no contract and no invoices or work orders were ever generated.
Can the guy I recorded with claim copyright to the sound recordings?
