Which class would be more essential – recording studio procedures or music production?
Question by Rob: Which class would be more essential – recording studio procedures or music production?
I want a career in the music industry as an exec but I also want to make music myself producing and songwriting. I’m going for my AA in comm college and I need to pick ONE of these courses but which one will benefit me in the end? I’m afraid music production will only focus on computers and MIDI. And if the recording studio class incorporates studio setup AND production while we’re in there, that’d be perfect. But I’m also afraid it may concentrate only on studio setup and not enough on music-making. Advice please? =/

These classes, if they follow the same standards as other music schools, are not going to help or hurt either way. Procedures is going to cover things like mic placement, line control, knowledge of studio equipment, and general studio operations. Production should kind of cover the actual making of the music after you have some form of experience and control in the studio. I would suggest taking the procedures class and then take the production class later.
But, if you want to be an exec then you really need to be taking business and marketing classes. Yes, of course it is good to know what is happening in the studio, and if you go independent then you will probably be filling both exec and production roles, but if your primary goal is to work in the back office then you need to know how the business works more than the equipment. Further, you’ll also want to understand contract and copyright law, so classes that introduce you to those topics would be good as well.
You will find great value in these both of these classes if you want to produce your own music (one might be more technical than the other) and you will understand the inner workings of song production better, but neither is going to be better than the other if you want to be an exec. Seriously, though, if you can, take both if you want to work in the studio. There is a lot of great information in both. Good luck to you.
