when you are an independant consultant for a firm do you typically sign a contract agreement?

Question by glama-mama: when you are an independant consultant for a firm do you typically sign a contract agreement?
I have been offered an hourly rate at a well known industrial company. I will be an independent consultant working in the IT department. The firm wrote an email to me with my hourly rate, but I have been given no contract. Is this normal?

It’s not abnormal, if you agree to the rate go ahead, save all emails and make sure they pay you that much. If you think you really need a contract ask them to draw one up for you detailing the requirements of your employment.
