Question by Elation: What jobs can I do in a music industry?
Do I have to be creative as well or what do you call those guys who work in a recording company? Do I need a four year degree for that?

in general you don’t really need any college education for jobs in the music industry unless you want to be an entertainment lawyer or something like that. depending on what area you intend on working will define what kind of schooling if any you would need to do. most positions within the music industry are achieved with experience, and connections. a lot of times it’s more of who you know than what you know.

there are schools that offer music business courses and even degrees, there are also schools that teach recording and things like that. in general if you are in school i would recommend communications, business, and anything music related (not instrument). any knowledge is good knowledge.

fields in the music area include recording/mixing/mastering engineers, producer, record label (and everything within), marketing, promotions, touring, management, a&r, merchandise, distribution, just to name a few.

i would suggest doing some research into some fields and finding more info about something that interests you. then you can contact people in those areas and find out what kind of education and things like that you would need. usually it’s just about getting your foot in the door somewhere and moving up the ladder.

the best advice i can give you is to get started now. try to get an internship or something somewhere. if you want to work with groups touring, then find someone local to work with. gain all of the experience you can, because thats what matters. if i want someone to work with me at my label i want someone that has some kind of idea about how things work. i don’t care where anyone went to school if they’ve had experience.

there is no suire fire way to get into the business. sometimes its just as hard to find a job in the music field as it is to be the artist in the field. i would have a backup plan because nothing is garunteed. this isn’t an industry like banking or something that you can go send resumes out to find jobs, it’s more intimate than that. people want to work with people they know and trust. find and make connections. don’t be an asshole because people wont want to work with you because of that.
