Just wondering, cause I am a songwriter so that question just popped up in my little brain. 😉

Copyright is just a protection – registration with the US. Government – showing that you wrote the song. Licensing is either through ASCAP or BMI. Licensing allows your song to be played for instance on the radio, and you get paid for it. The licensing agencies collect the money and dish it out to you.
