What do you think of Chertoff (head of DHS under Bush) getting govt. contracts for full body scanners?

Question by _______: What do you think of Chertoff (head of DHS under Bush) getting govt. contracts for full body scanners?
A lot of money for these scanners was included in the 2009 “stimulus” bill. (Almost as if someone wanted to bury the purchase of these machines under thousands of pages………hmmmm)

In addition, one of the only two companies that got the exclusive government contract to produce the machines is a client of Chertoff’s security consulting agency (Chertoff Group). This company is called Rapiscan.

A) Why were funds for full body scanners included in the “stimulus”? ( I seem to remember the govt. claiming the Christmas day bomber was proof we needed them………….yet we had already set aside money for them many months before)
B) Do you think the purchase of these body scanners was about security or a nice example of why people think the federal government is so corrupt?

WASHINGTON – Since the attempted bombing of a US airliner on Christmas Day, former Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff has given dozens of media interviews touting the need for the federal government to buy more full-body scanners for airports.

What he has made little mention of is that the Chertoff Group, his security consulting agency, includes a client that manufactures the machines. Chertoff disclosed the relationship on a CNN program Wednesday, in response to a question……………..Chertoff’s advocacy for the technology dates to his time in the Bush administration. In 2005, Homeland Security ordered the government’s first batch of the scanners – five from California-based Rapiscan Systems. Rapiscan is one of only two companies that make full-body scanners in accordance with current contract specifications required by the federal government………………….In the summer, TSA purchased 150 more machines from Rapiscan with $ 25 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. Rapiscan was the only company that qualified for the contract because it had developed technology that performs the screening using a less-graphic body imaging system, which is also less controversial. (Since then, another company, L-3 Communications, has qualified for future contracts, but no new contracts have been awarded.)

Records show that it took the department almost seven months just to order the 150 Advanced Imaging Technology units covered by the stimulus bill. A spokesman for Rapiscan, the California-based company that builds the machines, said the company has since delivered more than 100 of them to the Transportation Security Administration.
peace through blinding force……….

lol………Surely you aren’t going to pretend Chertoff is just an innocent businessman trying to make an honest living. Yes, Democrats are as corrupt as Republicans. That’s why nothing ever changes. Both parties are constantly feeding the same interests.
