Question by Kevin: What are the steps for a music producer after creating a track for an artist?
I recordedvocals/mix/mastered/produced a track for an artist. I have made many beats before but this is the first time I have worked with an artist and am wondering if I need to create a contract. If so how and why. Shoud I file a copyright application for my song? I was told I will get some radio play as well, so is there any essential things I need to address/handle now that the track is finished?

It really depends on the current (probably / possibly unspoken) agreement that you already have with the artist. Are you a “work for hire” or “collaborating with the artist”? If you are being considered as a work for hire then you will / should be paid for the work and that is pretty much the end. It is the artist piece from that point. However if you are collaborating with the artist, you should determine a %age and split any profit and ownership.
Contracts are a good idea for any / all types of partnerships.
Copyright registration is a good idea as well. Its a well spent (est) $ 40-50 (depending on the rate nowadays). http://www.copyright.gov/
