What are some resources about the music industry?
Question by Erinn M: What are some resources about the music industry?
I am writing a novel and I was wondering if anyone could point me to some good resources where I could learn more about the music industry.
How contracts work– what % of the profits does the artist make verses the company?
What does a mixer do? A producer? A manager?
How does a tour get organized?
About how many people does a band have on staff?
What is the recording process like?
I’m looking for a relaible website or a book that can explain it to me. Or if anyone has personal experaince that would be cool too. Thank you.

Billboard magazine is the measuring stick of the industry. You could pick up a copy of their magazine (or browse the website, although you have to pay for certain features) for some info.
The recording process varies from artist to artist. You often see bands arguing fiercely with one another, trying to get their opinions/ideas expressed on the record. Individuals don’t have as much animosity in the studio, but they can often bicker with their producer as to what sound they’re trying to nail down.
One day, I’d like to start my own record label. Upon a little bit of research, I stumbled upon the books linked below. They might be of use to you.
From one writer to another, good luck with the book.
