What are some noteworthy stories, within the past couple years, about digital distribution and music piracy?

Question by bdsport445: What are some noteworthy stories, within the past couple years, about digital distribution and music piracy?
I remember hearing Kid Rock talk about how he wanted people to download his stuff however they could so they would want to see his concerts and I remember hearing that Dave Matthews Band supported Napster back in the day even when it was illegal. Does anyone know where I could find sources for these or other similar stories? Also, anything about RIAA cases and about the settlement money not going to artists and stuff like that would be interesting.

I don’t think DMB ever supported Napster to trade copyrighted material, especially after an aborted album of theirs was leaked on the service in 2001. But DMB does support a Grateful Dead style of free music trading by allowing people to make an audio recording of their shows and distributing those recordings for free on the web, however they oppose the free trading of their studio albums and officially released materials.

Kid Rock also supports this kindof policy, and he does in fact allow people to trade his music on programs like LimeWire and Napster (back when it existed).
