Major music labels will go to any end to stop people from illegally downloading their latest prank is to place dummy mp3 files which were created by a number of software companies but will this work in their favour

NO, because people will just get their music from Torrents, and the sites that host them are very scrutinous and filter out all the bogus files with a quickness.
