Auto company leaders of different stripes
After several years of turbulence, the fate of the Detroit Three is now in the hands of two engineers — Ford CEO Alan Mulally and General Motors CEO Dan Akerson — and one lawyer, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne. All are outsiders to their companies and new to the North American auto industry. All came from different backgrounds.

Pending sales of homes were up in November
People are starting to buy homes again, lifting a battered industry that is bracing for its worst sales year in more than a decade. Signed contracts to purchase homes rose in November, the fourth increase in five months.
