Songwriters in the Round debuts at Foothills Art Gallery in LaFayette

The Northwest Georgia Arts Guild presented a Nashville-style Songwriters in the Round program Thursday night, Oct. 1, at the Foothills Art Gallery in LaFayette. The gallery is regional, showcasing artists and artwork for the northwest Georgia area. About 30 people attended the event, where four local songwriters and musicians per-formed original songs, along with a back-story to each song. The performers included Martha Ann Brooks of Chattooga County. Brooks songs are well-grounded in the folk music tradition of relating personal experiences, common occur-rences and newsworthy events, but also contain contemporary and unique elements that allow them to flow freely in, around and through many genres. Brooks has released two CDs of original music — Simply in 2006 and Lately in 2009. Ted Scoggins of LaFayette played to the crowd as well. Scoggins music covers several genres. He has music published by Nashville publisher Paradiso Music and has acoustic guitar music under contract with The Music Kitchen in Los Angeles, which caters to movies and television. Another songwriter who performed was Vic Burgess of LaFayette. Burgess is an award-winning musician and a former member of the groups Orange Julians and Death Valley Driver. Burgess’ music varies from whisper-rock to borderline metal. Last to perform was Bob Carty of Rossville, a local performer well-known for his unique style.
